AMEB Exams Explained – The What and the Why

AMEB-LogoThe AMEB, which stands for the Australian Music Examinations Board, is an institution which provides Music, speech and drama programs and subsequent examinations for students Australia wide. These programs are completed privately with a student’s own tutor, but are graded by the AMEB’s examiners. After its emergence in 1918, the AMEB has grown to become the most highly regarded grading system for these creative arts; with a specific focus on Music. The Music courses provided range from Preliminary all the way through to Diploma level (all of which are recognised by most major Australian Universities) and are formulated by consistent research and scholarly input by Australia’s creative elite.

For those familiar with the format and processes of these particular Musical exams, Students and Parents alike may still be questioning; “Why should I, or my Child, study and sit for an AMEB exam?”

To answer this question, there are many benefits associated with enrolment in AMEB programs. These benefits will be delved into further below:

  1. Establishing a good work ethic

Each student must demonstrate at a competent level all scales, aural work, general knowledge, theory and set pieces outlined in the AMEB curriculum for that particular grade. The processes undertaken during the study and preparation for any AMEB exam can be broken down and looked at in the scheme of a week. For most students this would consist of having at-least one half hour or hour formal lesson a week, as well as a set amount of days and times within that week to be dedicated to home practice. If this formula is adhered to on a weekly basis, this instils a life-long ability for a student to not only work very productively, but to also be able to manage their time effectively and work for the most part unsupervised. Music students undergoing curriculum study such as the courses set by the AMEB typically learn how to interpret large bodies of work, problem solve complex musical & playing techniques for easier reproduction of the piece played and ability to communicate with others; namely their musical tutor.

2. A comprehensive understanding of Music and different Music genres

For a Musician of any level to fully understand and grasp each aspect of Music and how these aspects work together, it is essentialwritingmusic to understand the rudiments of Music from a basic and root level. Many musicians who have tried to learn their particular instrument through other avenues such as self-teaching or being taught through a method of copying other musicians, usually do not have the ability to read Music, to count throughout a piece of Music, to interpret Music dynamically, or to play pieces from a wide variety of styles. The AMEB programs in conjunction with a well-educated teacher allow students to comprehensively learn their instrument using many genres and styles ranging from Classical, to Pop, to Jazz, and everything in-between. AMEB courses give a student exposure to many different types of Music of varying difficulty and enable them to interpret a vast array of different types of Music. This is essential for any student who wants to pursue Music professionally, as what is comprehensively learnt from an AMEB course will open doors for students to ultimately pursue Music of their liking and choice. After all, one can only figure out which musical styles suit them most as a musician only after having been exposed and experiencing many different styles of Music.

3. Building Confidence

However, with the guidance of a good teacher, they soon learn that the pieces, technical work and other associated material is easier to understand by simply breaking it down into smaller, easily comprehendible pieces which would be tackled one part at a time.

Once a student has taken their exam and passed, they feel an overwhelming sense of pride and achievement, that they were able to not only merely complete the course work, but were able to demonstrate and perform the course requirements at a competent level. This can significantly enhance a student’s confidence in their Musical ability, which in turn can boost their confidence in many other non-Musical facets of their life both personally and academically.

AMEB is a most valuable institution for the Performing Arts community in Australia, and provides a solid foundation for both tutors and students in regards to music education. AMEB provide Australia’s Musical Education community with a multitude of instrument and performing arts courses, all with varying grades and formats for all types of students to achieve in. With proper guidance from your Music tutor, there is sure to be an AMEB course which is right for any individual interested in improving their musical knowledge and performing ability.
