Aussie Musician Profile: Jessica Mauboy

Jessica MauboyWho doesn’t love Jessica Mauboy?  An talented singer with and amazing voice and a heartwarming smile, Jessica predominantly sings R&B and was the runner up in the fourth season of Aussie Idol In 2006 and was subsequently signed by Sony Music.

In 2007 she released her first album “The Journey” which debuted at number 4 on the ARIA charts and went gold.  Her second album “Been Waiting” in 2008 and it went double platinum.

Since then, she has been a part of the all-girl group – Young Divas – has starred in the Aussie film “The Sapphires” in 2012, and won the AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Jessica’s music is a mixture of R&B and pop and she also incorporates hip hop as well.  She sings about love, boys and break-ups, and also has themes on every day life, family issues, friendships and women’s empowerment as well.

She grew up listening to country singers like Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton, as well as rappers Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.  Jessica likes to play the piano and sing songs by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston who she claims as her musical inspirations, and John Farnham as her biggest Australian musical influence.

Outside of music, actress Deborah Mailman is someone Jessica admires, and Olympian Cathy Freeman has been influential in her life.

Jessica is a fan of Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé and many people have stated her as the Aussie Beyoncé – Jessica has been fairly humble responding by saying “I just think she’s fantastic and I’m completely nowhere near where she is, but I aspire to that.”
